Buying a new mattress? With thousands of choices out there on the market, it's important to decide what comfort means to you before investing in the perfect mattress. While it is purely a personal choice, there are elements that can influence which mattress is right for you.

Not too hard not too soft - you want a bed that's just right! No two people are the same, so to help you out, we've compiled a quick and easy mattress guide to assist you with making the ultimate decision.

Different Mattress Firmness

Here at Discount Beds, each of our mattresses will fit into one of five different firmness ratings. That way you know exactly what you're getting. Be sure to keep an eye out for these firmness rating labels online and in-store, or you can just click on them now to filter the most comfortable and supportive mattresses for you.

Our firmness levels come in 5 categories:

  1. Soft Mattress - Softest firmness rating offers a plush surface • Suitable for lightweight or side sleepers  • Least support for the body.
  2. Medium Mattress – Average overall support to the body • Ideal for side sleepers.
  3. Medium Firm Mattress – Medium/Firm offers generous support for the whole body • Cushioning for comfort and offers some sinking • Suitable for all styles of sleepers.
  4. Firm Mattress – A firm mattress offers good support all over • Some Orthopaedic mattresses will be in this category • Suitable for front and back sleepers.
  5. Extra Firm Mattress – No softness and a completely solid support • Minimal sink or plushness • Suitable for front & back sleepers

Soft Mattress:

The softest firmness rating is for those who prefer a gentle surface to sleep on and are the softest mattresses you can get. Offering a high level of sink, they are suitable for lightweight or side sleepers as the mattress allows the shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress.

Medium Mattress:

Medium mattress firmness is perfect if you're a side sleeper. Designed to offer support to your body whilst combatting joint pressure, a medium mattress will deliver a good nights sleep with not as much sink and will accommodate most body sizes.

Medium Firm Mattress:

A medium firm mattress is suitable for those who enjoy sleeping on their back, side or front whilst again offering the right amount of support for joint pressure. This can sometimes prove to be a good compromise for couples who prefer both a medium and firm feel of a mattress and can potentially help those that suffer from back pain.

Firm Mattress:

If you enjoy sleeping on your back or stomach – the firm mattress is designed to give you the perfect amount of support. Offering a solid, supportive surface, there is enough cushioning to prevent problems at pressure points. Orthopaedic mattresses are generally included in this category.

Extra Firm Mattress:

Extra firm mattresses provide enhanced back support as the design offers a level surface to the whole body when you sleep therefore offering the sturdiest sleeping support. This extra support allows you to maintain a good posture, even whilst sleeping as it prevents your back from curving and is suitable for both front and back sleepers. Orthopaedic mattresses are also generally included in this category.

While finding the optimal mattress firmness, you will also need to consider other elements that could influence the type of mattress best suited to you. Some of the most important points include:

  • Personal Comfort Preferences – Firmness is dependent on your personal preference and what you find comfortable. Despite recommendations from professionals, no one knows your body better than you so this needs to be taken into account.
  • Weight – Mattresses responds differently to the weight and pressure of an individual. Depending on your weight, your mattress firmness level may differ and this needs to be taken into account before purchasing. For lighter individuals, a soft or medium mattress may suffice whereas, for individuals that have slightly heavier weight, this can mean a firmer mattress is required.
  • Sleeping position
    • Side Sleepers – With more increased pressure points usually around the shoulder or hips, a softer mattress could be required, generally, a medium-firm mattress can suffice.
    • Back Sleepers – Though good for the spine, support is required for the lower back to ensure that the natural curve does not get exaggerated in any direction.
    • Stomach Sleepers - Generally a more firm mattress is recommended to avoid causing a 'U' shape when the abdomen and pelvis sink in a softer mattress.
    • Combination Sleepers – For those who prefer to sleep in different positions throughout the night, a mattress in the middle range can be more suitable as it provides the most flexibility to provide comfort across a range of positions.
  • Sleeping Hot – With too much sink, airflow around the body can be limited which can cause a build-up of heat depending on the material of the mattress. This is generally more common with softer mattresses where the cushioning that contours closer to the body, therefore influence the type of mattress you go for.
  • Motion transfer – If moving on one side of the bed affects any other area of the bed too much, this can become problematic when sharing a bed for example. The material, firmness and design of the mattress can affect motion transfer hence would need to be taken into consideration.
  • Edge support – Whether you like to sit on the side of the bed or just enjoy sleeping on the side of the bed, it is important to note that the edge of a mattress is the weakest. Depending on the firmness of the mattress, this can provide either less or more support so will be an influencing factor in choosing the perfect mattress.
